What’s the diving like?
Bonaire's remarkable coral reefs and exceptional marine biodiversity are a rarity in the Caribbean. Situated in the southern Caribbean, the island enjoys an arid climate with minimal rainfall, ensuring crystal-clear waters that remain calm and suitable for diving year-round. With its favorable conditions, Bonaire is the perfect location for aspiring underwater photographers.

Sightseeing: Visit the Cargill Salt Ponds and Slave Huts
While it is not possible to tour the salt ponds in Bonaire, they are still worth admiring from a distance. The amount of salt extracted from the water is truly remarkable. However, there is a dark history associated with the salt ponds. In the past, much of the labor involved in building and maintaining the ponds was carried out by enslaved indigenous locals who were brought down from the northern part of the island. These enslaved individuals were housed in very small huts with up to 11 people in each one. There are two sets of these slave huts, as well as exhibits explaining their history, located on the coast south of the salt ponds. Admission is free.
Snorkeling: Salt Pier & Margate
The coastal region of Bonaire is abundant in excellent spots for snorkeling. Among them, Salt Pier and Margate stand out as our favorites. Salt Pier is particularly noteworthy as it offers a unique vertical perspective for snorkelers, with coral growing upwards along the pier's pilings. We also had the pleasure of encountering turtles in both locations. It is worth noting, however, that the shore is quite rocky, requiring caution when entering and exiting the water.
Sightseeing: Jibe City & Lac Bay
One of the enjoyable activities to experience in Bonaire is spending time at Jibe City located on Lac Bay. This area is situated on the windy side of the island, providing an excellent location for wind and kite surfing enthusiasts. Jibe City offers top-quality gear rentals for those interested in these activities. Additionally, visitors who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere can take advantage of the beach and complimentary lounge chairs, perfect for reading and enjoying refreshments. A restaurant is also available on site, serving delicious cuisine. The overall ambiance of Jibe City is laid-back and welcoming. Lessons for beginners are offered at a rate of $50 for a two-hour session, while board rentals are available for $50 for two hours. Stand-up paddle boards can be rented for $20 per hour.
Sightseeing: Donkey Sanctuary
Bonaire's history with donkeys began with their introduction by Spanish colonizers as beasts of burden. However, as motorized transportation replaced the use of donkeys, these animals were abandoned to survive on their own. As a result, an overpopulation of malnourished donkeys emerged on the island. To address this issue, a sanctuary was established to provide a safe and caring environment for the animals. The sanctuary offers sterilization services and currently houses around 600 donkeys. When visitors arrive at the sanctuary, they are greeted by a swarm of friendly donkeys who are looking for attention and treats. The sanctuary operates from 10 am to 5 pm and appreciates any donations visitors can offer.
